Dispatches from different planets

While Egyptians rise up against poverty and corruption, our betters have been meeting in Davos at the World Economic Forum. Reports give hope that the news from happenings outside are piercing the bubble…

“We have been led by greed. We have been led by only the bottom line, the profit and we have sacrificed the workers in order to please the stockholders.” says Maurice Levy, chairman and chief executive of French advertising giant Publicis.

And…

If you are not even creating jobs, not even sharing the economic growth that is coming through, then there will be push-back,” said Mthuli Ncube, Chief Economist for the African Development Bank. “It’s one thing to get good growth going. It is another to share that.” And so on…

So with hope that lessons are being learned and approaches being reevaluated what is the official communique out of the WEF? Why, there needs to be a new social contract! Oh my…this is heady stuff…a joyous day….oh…wait a sec…

“The new contract has to move beyond the rulers and the ruled,” said Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva of Thailand. “We’re all partners now.” The state should not intervene in the private sector, he declared, but should focus instead on creating the conditions that would allow companies to create employment and make profits for their shareholders.

Never mind.
